Gait Disorders – Slowing the Pace of Life…
Gait disorders are generally diagnosed as any change in the smoothness, symmetry, synchrony and speed of a person’s gait or walk, and are themselves not a disease but are typically the result of several underlying factors such as aging, disease or unanticipated injury to the neuromuscular system. Gait disorders can affect almost anybody, from the young to the elderly, causing significant reductions in the individual’s mobility.
Foot Drop, a Growing Problem
Foot drop is a type of gait disorder that is a chronic condition where a person has lost the ability to lift their foot during normal walking, causing their foot to drag across the ground and the need to swing the hips in an effort to clear the toes off the ground.
Foot drop usually results from stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. Foot drop is a debilitating condition which can cause profound weakness and fatigue due to the extra energy required to walk. In many cases, this reduction in mobility can lead to the loss of personal independence, and to increased need for physical therapy, assistive devices (such as orthotic braces) or to the use of external stimulation devices.

Neurostep® – Designed for People with Foot Drop
The Neurostep® is a neurostimulation investigational medical device incorporating our proprietary sensing, stimulation and advanced signal processing technologies. The entire system is designed to be implanted into the patient’s leg via a surgical procedure, during which electrodes are attached to the peripheral nerves responsible for sensing and stimulating the proper muscles that lift the foot during normal walking.
